Getting Started

To ensure a successful and efficient Datalogz setup, it's crucial to align on roles and responsibilities from the start. This document breaks down the key roles required for the setup, along with a checklist of actions for each.

1. Security/Identity Lead

This individual or team manages your organization's identity and access control system, such as Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD). Their primary responsibility is to create and secure the credentials Datalogz will use to access your BI and data environments.

Checklists:

  • Select a log-in method for accessing Datalogz.

  • In case of Microsoft authentication, allow users to sign in to Datalogz.

For more information, see the log-in methods documentation.

2. BI Administrator(s)

The BI Administrator is the primary point of contact for your Business Intelligence platform, such as Power BI, Tableau, Qlik and Spotfire. They will confirm that the Datalogz platform can successfully connect to and scan your environment.

Checklists:

  • Verify that the Service Principal has the correct Power BI Service Admin permissions.

  • Work with the Security Lead to ensure the Datalogz application is properly registered in your BI environment.

  • Confirm that Datalogz can successfully ingest metadata from your BI platform.

  • Validate that the security model and user access information is correctly reflected in Datalogz.

Fore more information, see the Power BI connector documentation.

3. Network Lead

The Network Lead is responsible for managing your organization's network security, including firewalls and network policies. They will ensure Datalogz has the required access to communicate with your internal systems.

Checklist:

  • Whitelist the necessary Datalogz URLs and/or IP addresses on your corporate firewall:

  • Confirm that there are no proxy or firewall restrictions that would prevent Datalogz from connecting to your BI and data platforms.

4. Data Platform Lead / Snowflake Admin (optional)

This individual manages your Snowflake data warehouse. Their responsibility is to create the dedicated user account for Datalogz and grant it the appropriate read-only access to your metadata.

This only applies if you are using the Datalogz Snowflake connector for data sharing.

Checklist:

  • Create a new, dedicated read-only user for Datalogz within your data warehouse.

  • Grant the Datalogz user the required read-only permissions to query the account usage and metadata views.

  • If your organization has IP whitelisting for your data warehouse, add the Datalogz IP addresses to the allowlist.

5. Datalogz Lead

Your dedicated Datalogz representative will be your guide through the entire process. They will provide the specific technical details, perform the initial scans, and support your team throughout the setup.

Checklist:

  • Provide the required technical documentation for all setup steps.

  • Confirm the URLs and IP addresses that need to be whitelisted.

  • Validate the Service Principal and data warehouse credentials you provide.

  • Schedule and perform the initial data scans.

  • Provide training and support to your team on using the Datalogz platform.
